What are Martensitic Stainless Steels?

Stainless steels are special types of steel that are resistant to rust due to their high chromium content. Martensitic stainless steels constitute a subgroup of stainless steels and have a martensitic structure. Martensite is a type of crystal structure in steels and has properties of hardness and magnetism. Martensitic stainless steels are commonly used in cutting tools and knife making due to their high hardness and magnetizability.

Some examples could include:

AISI 410: This type of steel is characterized by its high chromium content (typically around 12-13%). It offers high strength and corrosion resistance.

AISI 420: AISI 420 has a higher carbon content and, therefore, tends to be harder. It is commonly used in cutting tools and knife making.

AISI 440: This series includes several types of steel, such as AISI 440A, AISI 440B, and AISI 440C. These steels offer high hardness and corrosion resistance due to their high chromium and carbon content.

Martensitic stainless steels have excellent mechanical properties, hardness, and wear resistance but lower corrosion resistance. Therefore, their selection should be based on the environment and application where they will be used.
